Ponchatoula softball bounced back from a 6-5 heartbreaking loss Saturday with a 16-1 rout over Pearl River later the same evening.
The Lady Wave scored seven runs in the first and second innings, jumping out to a 14-0 lead. Lily Crittenden was the weekend’s winning pitcher with a 2-1 record. Skylar Cheek was 2-4 with two RBIs. Sadie Wells and Grace Garcia both were 2-3 at the plate, Garcia had three RBIs. Sydnie McGee was 2-2 with three RBI’s.
“Being able to come out of the first weekend 2-1 over some quality teams is a good way to start the season,” said Lady Wave Coach Jeremy Harper. “We are seeing the ball well right now. But what I preach to our team day in and day out is softball is a long season and you have to stay even. You have to be able to compete day in and day out. After a big win Friday night we came out a bit flat against a good Doyle team. Then bounced back in a big way against Pearl River. To play at the level I want us to, we have to be ready day in and day out. But overall I was very pleased with the weekend.”
On Friday, the Lady Wave stormed past Dutchtown 15-2 as the result of a 4-hit day. Sadie Wells was dialed in at the plate, earning a single in the first, double in the second, a homer in the third, a single in the fourth, and 4 RBIs.
Ponchatoula secured the victory thanks to eight runs in the second inning. Their big bats in the inning were led by Cheek who went 3-3 with 3 RBI’s and Crittenden who was 2-3 at the plate and also got the win pitching. Doubles by Brenna Criswell, Wells, and a home run by Kylie Burks secured the win.
The Lady Wave are 3-1 on the season.
