In my long, 60-year career as a professional journalist and reporter I have covered and written stories about countless meetings conducted by elected boards and councils in different cities where I have lived and worked.
Looking back, I have had to sit through many long, sometimes tedious, but usually productive meetings.
In my memory I cannot remember ever having to endure a meeting as mean-spirited and as contentious as the most recent meeting of the Hammond City Council.
Hammond has been my chosen home for the past 51 years, and I am proud of my city and have tried to do my small part to uplift this place I lovingly call home. Unfortunately, I have to say that I ashamed of the antics staged by some members of our city council.
It had been my fond hope that with a new year, and with a council that could make a new start, that relationships among the council members would improve. Sadly, I have to admit that nothing has changed.
Serving on a public body is a very special privilege and comes with a profound responsibility. I would hope, and expect, that the council members who make a covenant with the people who elect them would dedicate themselves to being positive, cooperative and dedicated to serving the common good.
Why can’t members of the council respect and cooperate with each other? Why does the Hammond City Council have to almost always be split on a 3-2 vote?
Our city needs a council with a positive, upbeat attitude and council members who can learn to work together for the common good...not a council dedicated to serving only the interest of each individual.
Would it not be wonderful if, instead of bickering over petty issues, our representatives on the council would take some initiative to solve at least some “small” problems?
I cite as an example the awful litter that befouls our city. I have served on the Keep Hammond Beautiful Committee for more than 10 years, and with the exception of Kip Andrews, we have had no assistance from the council whatsoever.
Is it too much to ask that our council members learn to respect each other and to respect our mayor, chief of police, city administrator and others who have exceptionally valuable leadership roles in governing our city?
I awake every day with the hope that members of our city council will re-dedicate themselves to becoming truly servants of the people... but I am afraid that all my hopes will remain in vain. So sad, so sad!
