Superintendent of Schools Melissa Stilley said Thursday evening that Nesom Middle School remains closed after several individuals there tested positive for the Covid-19 virus.
Also, sports activities at Loranger High School have been cancelled for the week, and the Independence High School football game tonight is cancelled.
Mrs. Stilley said current Covid-19 hotspots in the school system are Nesom Middle and Loranger and Independence high schools.
However, she said the situation in the high schools involves only athletics and is not in the classrooms or buildings.
At Nesom, she said, "our school nurses and Department of Health and Hospital officials conducted the contact tracing to identify close contacts. We believe these positive individuals were in close contact with basically the entire school so we closed the school buildings as a safety protocol to stop the spread of the virus and to disinfect the school."
As for when the school will reopen at Nesom, Mrs. Stilley said a decision will be made after receiving testing results. If the test results come back positive, she said it might be after the Thanksgiving holidays before Nesom School reopens.
Regarding Loranger High School, Mrs. Stilley said, "It seems that two officials calling a ballgame tested positive so many athletes are quarantined."
The covid situation at Independence High involves the football team, she said.
