Fashion Your Future Foundation, a 501(3) nonprofit in Independence, is collecting donations of clothing, luggage and money for recent hurricane disaster survivors of Lake Charles and across Calcasieu Parish.
“After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, we too went through exactly what the residents of Calcasieu Parish are experiencing now,” said organizer Cait Drinkwater, executive director of Fashion Your Future Foundation. “Remembering ‘I don’t even have a nightgown!’ and carrying around important documents and toiletries in Zip-locks freezer bags, sparked this mission to help others now.”
She plans for donation drop-off to begin Oct. 28 and for the first delivery Oct. 31.
“As this date is also Halloween, for those folks who have nothing useful to donate, consider having some candy and costumes for the children to enjoy would like to donate,” she said. “Only new packaged items, nothing homemade or used please.”
She and the group plan to make three donation trips, the next being before Thanksgiving and then before Christmas.
The group is looking to team up with a business or church in Lake Charles or Calcasieu Parish for the distribution. Also needed are a bus and driver or a large enclosed trailer to make the deliveries, Drinkwater said.
Fashion Your Future is also asking for donations of new five-gallon buckets with lids to contain donated items for each victim. She said they cannot accept unsorted, unlabeled items.
If any money donations are not used in funding the operation, they will be donated directly to needy residents of Lake Charles or Calcasieu Parish, Drinkwater said.
