Former fire chief Sonny Joiner dies

Former Ponchatoula Fire Chief Owen "Sonny" Joiner died this morning after suffering another massive stroke, according to his wife, Margaret McKneely Joiner.

He was a beloved leader in the community and the fire department where his son, Stormy, now serves as chief.

At mid-morning today, Emily McKneely Matise thanked all the family and friends who have already reached out to comfort the family.

"Our Papa Sonny was a remarkable man, husband, father, stepdad, public servant, citizen, friend, and so much more. We sincerely appreciate your prayers and love. He is at peace and he is at rest and for that we are thankful," she said.
