A driver was injured Monday afternoon when a train collided with his 18-wheeler.

An Amtrak train struck the front-most part of the freight truck’s tractor while the truck was driving on the Bonfiglio Lane crossing just south of Black Cat Road, between Independence and Tickfaw, authorities said.

While most of the engine portion was torn from the truck, the cab was relatively much less damaged in the accident.

“He’s very lucky he didn’t get on top of the tracks with the whole cab,” said Independence Fire Chief John Polito, whose agency responded to the collision.

A Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the freight truck driver received minor injuries, and there were no reports of passenger injuries on the train.
