Sharon Walker

Educator Sharon Walker received a “random act of kindness” the other day as she stood in the checkout line at the Ponchatoula Walmart store to buy items for a school supplies give-away event.

A woman ahead of her in line handed her $50. She said she just wanted to do something nice for somebody.

“This had never happened to me before in a store!” Mrs. Walker said. “I wish I could have hugged her and made sure that she knew how much this really meant to me! She put the biggest smile on my face.”

The Universal Village back-to-school supplies give-away event will be Aug. 7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the lower bus ramp at Hammond Westside Montessori School.

Children must be present, and each adult must sign to receive the give-aways, Mrs. Walker said.

She invites vendors to donate coupons to go in the give-away backpacks. All other donations are welcome too.
