Josie Clark

Josie Clark remembers the evening when actress Elizabeth Taylor, who had a room across the hallway in a Houston hotel, knocked on her door and asked if she wanted to go get a sandwich.

They were attending a fragrance show where the actress was promoting her "White Diamonds" and Mrs. Clark was buying for DH Holmes at Hammond Square.

"I didn't want to go out, but I made her bring me a roast beef sandwich back," Mrs. Clark recalled with a smile.

"Liz was a plain Jane, a sweetheart, just as down to earth as she could be," Mrs. Clark said. "She could have had a sandwich delivered to her, but she wanted to go out galavanting."

Mrs. Clark fondly remembers the vendor shows and trade seminars where she became acquainted with Miss Taylor, Oscar de la Renta, Coco Chanel and other big names in the fragrance industry.

She always worked in fragrance, and her personal favorite is Gabrielle Chanel.

Now, after 39 years with D.H. Holmes and Dillards, Mrs. Clark is finally retiring in time to celebrate her 89th birthday next month.
