Amond puts creativity, hard work into garden

GARDEN OF THE MONTH -- René Amond, at left, receives the Hammond Garden Club's Garden of the Month Award presented by Sue Parrill.

The Hammond Garden Club has given its Garden of the Month award for June to Rene Amond's beautiful yard at 901 W. Colorado.

As if 200 registered day lilies were not enough to produce beauty on her front lawn, Amond has added hostas, blue and yellow iris, Rose of Sharon, a Queen Palm, red Knockout roses, yellow cannas, a purple Althea plant, Angel Trumpet, azaleas, bridal wreath and crepe myrtles. And, in the Winter one may expect to find a Fleur de Lis outlined in gravel and rye grass.

The rear of the house is yet another kind of garden. It continues with day lilies, New Guinea Impatiens, hibiscus, caladiums, begonias, Mexican petunias, and trailing vinca, but also features several eye-catching tableaux: an area dedicated to former pets, one featuring road and railway signs, a playhouse and an optical illusion gate painted in her favorite turquoise color.

This garden is a clear manifestation of elbow grease and a whimsical imagination.
