DYERSBURG, Tenn. — Paris (Texas) hit two home runs in a six-run sixth inning to eliminate Ponchatoula from the Dixie Pre-Majors World Series 10-9 Monday morning.
Ponchatoula, which had rallied to defeat South Boston of Halifax County (Va.), in the tournament opener Saturday, also lost 10-9 to Christian Brothers of Memphis 10-9 Sunday afternoon.
Paris advanced to play the loser of Christian Brothers and Marion County (Fla.) later on Monday.
Cody Hampton's three-run home run jump-started a seven-run fourth inning for Ponchatoula Monday. Ralph Green followed with a solo shot and Stephen Perrin later added another three-run home run to make it 8-1.
Paris trimmed the deficit to 8-4 in the fifth, then Ponchatoula had a chance to keep Paris off the board in the sixth, but three errors led to the six runs and a 10-8 deficit.
Ponchatoula loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. A passed ball made it 10-9, but Green struck out to end the game.
Justin Crowell hit a solo home run to give Ponchatoula a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Paris evened it up in the bottom half of the inning. Green started the game before being relieved by Morgan Payne after four batters.
Ponchatoula also jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Christian Brothers Sunday with a walk and two singles in the second inning. Christian Brothers tied it in its half of the inning behind a single and two errors.
Perrin's three-run home run to center field put Ponchatoula back ahead, 4-1, in the third inning. Memphis again answered in the bottom of the inning, piecing together three hits to get to within 4-3.
Ponchatoula went out to an 8-3 lead in the fourth behind a walk, a hit batter, two singles and a double. Christian Brothers countered with three runs and four hits in the bottom of the inning.
Shelby Payne gave Ponchatoula a 9-6 lead with a solo home run in the fifth. Both teams failed to capitalize on hits until the bottom of the sixth, when Christian Brothers took advantage of four walks, a hit batter and two hits to take its first lead at 10-9.
Ponchatoula got a lead-off walk in the seventh but couldn't push the tying run in.
Ryan Daniels started for Ponchatoula. Shelby Payne and Perrin came in in relief.
