One of Piggly Wiggly’s keynote wins en route to first place in Sixth District East, West Division play was a come-from-behind 9-7 road win over Peake BMW.
Well, it’s time for the rematch between the first- and second-place teams in division play — with a team in Ponchatoula keeping close tabs on the action.
Loranger-based Piggly Wiggly (6-1) takes on St. Paul’s-based Peake (5-2) at 6 p.m. at Amite High’s diamond. Meanwhile, Pevey Realtors (4-3) entertains Hammond (0-7) at 6 p.m. at Ponchatoula Athletic Park.
“It’s going to to be difficult to beat them twice,” Piggly Wiggly coach Jason Helmstetter said. “They’re a very good team, and they compete pretty well in that 5A district.”
Piggly Wiggly rallied from a 7-2 deficit before winning in extra innings in their previous matchup in Covington. The team comprised of players from three area Class 3A schools currently has a one-game lead over Peake heading into today’s action. Pevey, which defeated Peake 9-4 last Thursday, is one game behind Peake in third-place tie with LLOG Explo-ration (Mandeville).
Pevey coach Mark Gosnell said he feels the team is starting to peak, no pun intended, after downing Peake and the team is playing more relaxed. Elisha Settoon will get the start for Pevey while Trevor Ragan will take the hill for Hammond.
“We played well in the last three games,” Gosnell said. “They’ve made progress and I’m really happy about that.”
Hammond coach Steve Labbe said his team played well defensively last week against LLOG, but could not stop LLOG offensively. His team will have a simple approach against Pevey.
“we have to score more runs than them, and not let them score as many runs as us,” Labbe said.
Helmstetter said the team is playing relaxed at this point of the season. The team believes they have a chance to beat Peake a second time. Either Taylor Abdalla or Steven Mercier will get the start for Piggly Wiggly.
“As long as they think we have a chance, we’ll be OK,” he said. “We’ve done a good a good job of playing some tough teams in prep and preparing for those high-quality teams.”
