AMITE - Tangipahoa Parish has gotten a $235,256 grant to help implement the
state's new construction code process.
Parish President Gordon Burgess said he plans to spend part of it to update software and equipment and to renovate a parish-owned building in Roseland for a second parish permit office to serve north and central parish residents.
The permit office, currently located in Hammond, issues some 12,000 permits a year, ranging from building, moving, driveway culverts, electricity, logging and many other types of permits.
In April, the incorporated areas of Kentwood, Tangipahoa, Roseland,
Amite and Tickfaw signed agreements with the parish permit office to issue
their building permits and make inspections.
The Roseland site is already being renovated, and Burgess hopes to have it opened by the first of the year.
Plans are to expand the Hammond Permit Office in the current building at the Club Deluxe Road site later.
Parish officials are awaiting word on more grant money for the project.
