Two mixed-breed black and tan dogs have a chance at a brighter future after being tossed to the road side in Robert and going without food for two to three weeks.
Randy Stegall, president and investigator for the Tangipahoa Chapter Humane Society of Louisiana, said he had seen the dogs over the course of the past two weeks while on his regular newspaper route in Riverdale Heights.
“They were all right at first, and then I noticed they were getting skinnier,” he said.
He called one of his customers on the route who told him the dogs were dropped off and belonged to no one in the neighborhood. He retrieved the abandoned dogs at noon on Monday.
“They were so hungry that they went right into the trap,” Stegall said.
Besides being emaciated and dehydrated, the dogs were covered in large ticks and could hardly stand up.
Stegall's first stop was veterinarian Dr. Larry Ernst with Ponchatoula Animal Hospital where the agency has a prepaid account. After making sure the dogs, a male and female, were otherwise uninjured, he said he would take them home to Springfield where he and his wife would “fatten them up” and begin the process of looking for adopters.
