A Hammond woman saw a pregnant chocolate Labrador Retriever that someone had abandoned in a wooded area near Hammond.
The woman called the Tangipahoa Parish chapter of the Humane Society.
President Randy Stegall and wife, Lynda, picked up the dog and discovered that as round as she was, she was starving and sickly.
The lab gave birth to 12 pups, and the Stegalls now are getting some weight on the mama dog.
“The vet gave her shots, and after the puppies get weaned, we can get her some heart worm medicine,” Stegall said.
The puppies will be listed at www.petfinder.com (click on “shelters and rescue” to get to the Tangipahoa Humane Society) as soon as they are old enough for adoption, he said.
The Humane Society still needs donations of fence wire and 2-by-4 lumber for fencing, Stegall said.
Donations of money for vet bills and supplies are always needed and appreciated, he said.
The local chapter's membership has reached 48 now, and Stegall hopes to arrange for a meeting in the Amite area for the convenience of interested people in northern Tangipahoa Parish.
Subcommittees and more officers will be chosen at an upcoming meeting, he said.
