Superintendent applicants list experience

Daily Star Staff Writer

Five persons have applied for the superintendent's job.

They described themselves in their resumes as follows:

Linda Monteleone Abels

Abels has 31 years in public education, including 13 years with the Livingston Parish School System and 18 with Tangipahoa.

Nineteen years have been as an administrator, including six as assistant principal at Springfield Middle School, seven as principal of the school, six as principal of Hammond Westside Primary, six as a resource teacher/curriculum coordinator with the Title I Program, six as a classroom teacher.

Her degrees include educational specialist in educational administration from Southeastern Louisiana University; master of education in school administration and supervision from SLU, and bachelor of arts in elementary education from Northeast Louisiana University.

Her areas of certification are elementary teacher, principal, supervisor, supervisor of student teaching, superintendent.

Mark Kolwe

Kolwe holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from SLU and a master of business administration from SLU.

He has been an accountant with the Tangipahoa Parish School System from 1974 to 75, director of business affairs (1975-83), administrative director of business affairs (1983-96) and administrative director of finance and support services (1996-03). He is assistant superintendent of finance and support services.

His responsibilities include being the superintendent's designee; budgeting, accounting services and purchasing; transportation; child nutrition; risk management, disaster and emergency operations, technology, maintenance and operations, capital projects; health services; curriculum and instruction (textbook acquisition, grant management and implementation, staff).

He is a member of the following professional organizations: Louisi-ana Association of School Executives, Association of School Business Officials International, Louisiana Association of School Business Officials, Government Finance Association of the United States and Canada.

Charles S. Michel, Ph.D.

Michel did his doctoral studies in education and educational leadership at Sam Houston State University; holds a master of education, administration and supervision degree from Nicholls State University, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Nicholls State.

He is principal of Clark High School in New Orleans.

His experience also includes being supervisor at Garcia Middle School, Fort Bend, Texas, Independent School District; assistant principal at Spring Woods Middle School, Spring Branch, Texas, ISD; assistant principal, at Katy High School, Katy, Texas, ISD; a classroom teacher at Memorial Parkway Elementary School, Katy ISD; third party programs coordinator for Lafourche Parish School Board, Thibodaux; and a classroom teacher for the Lafourche Parish School Board.

He was nominated for Who's Who of American Educators and received the Roger Beck Service Award at Katy and Teacher of the Year Award at Memorial Parkway Elementary.

He serve on the Fort Bend ISD Voice Over Internet committee; middle school design committee; high Sschool attendance zone committee; Fort Bend ISD K-8 math plan subcommittee; cistrict wireless technology committee; middle school team concept continuation committee; FBISD intra district transfer procedures committee; FBISD technology plan committee.

Carol T. Smith

Smith holds a master degree in education leadership and supervision from Xavier University, New Orleans; a master's in mental health/guidance counseling from Xavier; a bachelor of psychology degree from Southern University, New Orleans; two associate of arts degrees and a general science/general studies from Delgado Community College, New Orleans. She also earned 60 hours toward a PhD from Cappella University, Minneapolis.

She listed the following experience: School counselor, A.P. Tureaud School, New Orleans; school administrator, Perrault School and St. Monica Catholic School, New Orleans; teacher, New Orleans public school system; counselor, Alliance of the Mentally Ill, New Orleans, and Pathways RHD, Harvey; chemist, LSI Laboratory, Belle Chasse; lab technician, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, New Orleans.

Elizabeth Duran Swinford, Ed.D.

Swinford is associate superintendent for human resources, East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

She listed the following experience: director of certified personnel, Caddo Parish Schools, Shreveport; principal, Morongo Unified School District, Twentynine Palms High School, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; assistant principal, Morongo Unified School District, Yucca Valley High School, Yucca Valley, Calif.; assistant principal, Volusia County Schools, Pine Ridge High School, Deltona, Fla.; dean of students, Volusia County Schools, Deltona High School, Deltona, Fla; biology teacher, Deltona High School; science, math and Spanish teacher, Warner Christian Academy, South Daytona, Fla; honors math and science teacher, American Military Academy, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

Her education includes an Ed.D. in organizational leadership (scheduled for March/April), Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a master's degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University; a bachelor's degree in biology with minor in secondary education from Inter American University, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

She holds membership in the American Association of School Personnel Administrators, Louisi-ana Association of School Personnel Administrators, Ameri-can Association of School Administrators, Association of School and Curriculum Develop-ment, National Staff Development Council, Louisiana Task Force to Define HOUSSE rules.

Her awards include Who's Who Among International Business Leaders and Who's Who Among Professionals.

She has specialized training in conflict resolution, facilitative leadership, True Colors training, crime reporting, interest-based bargaining training, the Louisiana school personnel law, the No Child Left Behind summit and strategic planning.
